What Can I Do About Homelessness?
The first question we are asked is, “What can I do when I encounter someone experiencing homelessness?”
Today, we will break down a few suggestions that will give you a road map to navigate these crucial encounters.
The first thing you can do is decide…. Decide that our homeless neighbors are not just a nuisance or an eyesore, but human beings who are made in the image of God and deserve our respect, consideration, and time.
Once you identify someone, you should engage. It can feel uncomfortable striking up a conversation with a stranger. While it is true that not every person wants to talk, most do. Be the person who refuses to let our brothers and sisters in the street go another hour before someone reminds them that they exist and matter.
If someone asks you for money and you decide ahead of time that you aren’t giving them any, try being honest. Don’t tell the person, “I don’t have any.” Say, “I don’t give money to strangers.” Honesty goes a long way. You can always try offering something else like a cup of coffee, a conversation, or a pair of socks.
The last thing you can do is learn about the resources and the organizations around to help folks struggling with homelessness on their journey. Learn where the free beds are for people with no place to sleep. Learn where the drop-in centers are. Learn about the city shelter system. Or sign up for mental health first-aid training.
The good news is this: while you can’t do everything, you can do something. We can all play our part because we all have something to offer.
